Are your people supported to grow as leaders?
Becoming a confident and capable leader takes more than experience or a job title. People need opportunities to develop their skills and build confidence in leading others.
Whether someone is new to leadership or has managed a service for years, there will always be opportunities to develop their skills and approach.
Leaders don’t come ready-made
Developing as a leader takes time, experience and support. Whether someone is new to leadership or has been managing a service for years, there will always be opportunities to build their confidence, skills and approach.
Supporting people to develop
Leadership development doesn’t need to be complicated, but it does need dedicated time set aside for it — otherwise, it will always fall to the bottom of a list of competing priorities.
It also needs support. Leadership development doesn’t happen in isolation; people benefit from having someone to help them reflect on their practice, explore different approaches and develop the skills and confidence they need in their role.
Good leadership development starts with the individual — their experience, their confidence, the responsibilities they hold, the situations they are dealing with and, crucially, their own views about where they want to develop.
I work with Registered Managers and other leaders to provide support that reflects their individual development needs and gives them practical skills they can use in their day-to-day role.
That might include:
-
Building confidence as a leader
-
Understanding roles, responsibilities and accountability
-
Developing supervision and performance management skills
-
Managing difficult conversations
-
Delegating effectively and setting clear expectations
-
Motivating and developing others
-
Leading people through change
-
Developing decision-making and problem-solving skills
-
Adapting leadership style to different people and situations
Leadership tools you can actually use
I use straightforward models and practical tools to help leaders understand situations differently and consider how they might approach them.
We use real situations from their own service to explore what might work — whether that’s leading someone through change, adapting their approach to different members of the team, coaching someone to find their own solution or communicating the reason behind a decision.
Experience of leading in care
Having spent more than 15 years working in domiciliary care, from Registered Manager through to senior operational roles, I understand the realities of leading people while also managing the everyday demands of a service.
My approach is supportive and practical, creating space for leaders to talk openly about what they are finding difficult, explore different approaches and build confidence in their own judgement.
